This isn't a very new update but in case you don't know, Facebook now introduced a feature so that you can chat with your friends.
It's very interesting (according to me) because FB is the first social network (at least that I know of) which allows a live chat on the lines of gmail. Meaning its chatting feature is built in into the browser (rather than in a messenger that you have to download).
The advantages of such a chat client are many obviously the most important being obviously that you don't have to install a chat client. You can just log in via any browser and start chatting.
Why a chatting functionality is more interesting on facebook is because social networks have rarely giving such connectivity. I remember people telling me 'don't ping me on yahoo (messenger), leave me a scrap (on orkut) instead'. These folks were trying to get to a certain number of scraps in their orkut. It was like the number of scraps you had meant something more than just that.
It is going to bring more 'eyeballs' to facebook for sure.
Also (and here is where I am smiling), Facebook is giving its users more and more and becoming a very holistic social network. It is leaving its competitors way behind.
Make me think - Facebook is just like Google :) Now only if they got into search marketing, it would be very very interesting.
