Google Analytics

A very good resources to learn about Google Analytics is the Conversion University.

It has presentations that you can quickly watch and figure out all the basics about GA features and options.

I very faintly remember getting page statistics from yahoo geocities long time back. That was about 4-5 years back. Is google selling naye packet mein wohi cheez poorani? I say that cause most web servers should have this feature in built to track your page hits.

You definitely will get nearly all data from your server logs (though benchmarking is something unique to GA but I wouldn't rely on the numbers a 100%) but I don't know how that data is presented. With GA you get data that can be filtered and cleaned up. You can also get graphs and you can set up set up goals (conversion pages) and funnels. I think most paid analytics tools would also provide all this but for a free tool GA is nice and robust. Easy to install, easy to read the data etc.

[Btw not sure about yahoo geocities and if there is any link to this but Google bought Urchin and did not build the analytics product from scratch]

I am sure I can build a tool to continuously monitor data present on a server. If not there must be one available to do that. Making applications to represent graphs, prettying it up for most part is easy. But i think I see your point that for a average joe florists he would like to have one place, (analytics) where he can go and check his progress/charts etc. primarily because he may/maynot be hosting his own website. Thanks Deepali.

Yup exactly - for someone who isn't technically adept and has a simple enough site, GA can be a boon.
